Does replication software such as S2S and EDR replace tape backups?
NOTE: This information is not Operating System specific
No. Although replication software is a form of backup, it is does not replace regular tape backups. Regular tape backups provide a level of data protection that is not in replication software. Take for example this scenario: A replication job is configured to mirror the contents of one system to another. Data on the source is accidentally deleted. The replication job runs. The deleted data is removed on the target system. This scenario outlines the importance of another level of data protection. Mirroring contents from one system provides immediate data availability when the source is completely offline. But mirroring can also result in unwanted purge of data or spread of unwanted data.
