Admin password not working in GUI, SSH or shares and will not reset with reset button

Version 1

    When unable to get into the unit using the admin username or password, the userlist.txt may be corrupted or a symbolic link to itself.  The reset button does not appear to correct this.  This has been observed on GuardianOS 5.2.056.

    You will need a serial null modem connection to the Snap.

    While attached to the serial port using a terminal program such as HyperTerminal (capture the output)(115200, 8, N, 1 no hardware flow control) select TSERVER mode to boot into recovery.  Then run the following commands:

    "rootmount"

    "ls -l /mnt/pivot/flash"

    Verify if userlist.txt is a symbolic link to itself, ie it would display as

    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root admingrp    19 2009-12-29 11:48 userlist.txt -> /flash/userlist.txt

    If this is the case perform the following:

    "/mnt/pivot/bin/mv /mnt/pivot/etc/shadow /mnt/pivot/etc/shadow.bak"

    "/mnt/pivot/bin/mv /mnt/pivot/etc/shadow.old /mnt/pivot/etc/shadow.old.bak"

    "/mnt/pivot/bin/mv /mnt/pivot/flash/userlist.txt /mnt/pivot/flash/userlist.txt.bak"

    "reboot -f"

    The unit will then reboot.  After 5-7 minutes it should boot back into normal mode and you should be able to log in using the default admin name and password ("admin" / "admin").

    After resolving this issue - collect  a syswrapper, collect information about what customer was doing immediately prior and escalate the issue.  We are currently investigating this problem to determine root cause as it is not easily reproducible.
