I have a fibre channel environment. What is the difference between long-wave and short-wave cables?

Solution: The main difference between long- and short-wave cables is the distance that can be covered.

    Short-wave cables (usually orange) transmit:

-- Up to 500 meters using multi-mode fiber (50/125 micron).
-- Up to 240 meters using multi-mode fiber (62.5/125 micron).

Long-wave cables (usually yellow) transmit: up to 10 kilometers using single-mode fiber (9/125 micron) .
